The Cowdray Estate said the theft happened between the evening of Thursday, September 3, and the early hours of Friday, September 4.

“Cowdray can confirm that a number of stone slabs were removed by thieves either late on Thursday or in the early hours of Friday from the centre of the causeway,” said a spokesman.

“They gained access by cutting the locks at the Ruins end of the causeway and must have removed them using large machinery.”
