Gales of up to 70mph tore through the south uprooting trees, pulling down power lines and causing havoc on the roads and railway lines.

UK Power Networks, which is responsible for supplying electricity to homes in the south east and east of England, said engineers had already restored power to 100,000 homes with engineers working on another 17,000.

A spokesman for the electricity provider said: “Hundreds of UK Power Networks engineers have restored power to about 100,690 properties and are working hard now to reconnect a further 17,500 across the South East and East.

“Teams will continue to work to restore as many power supplies as possible today and will work round the clock. However due to the sustained wind speeds and the scale of the damage, some properties will still be without power tomorrow.

“Our priority is to help vulnerable people who are affected and we are organising practical help in the form of home visits and hot food, wherever possible.”

The total does not represent the full picture for Sussex with areas of the western part of the county covered by Southern Electric.
