Students are reminded of licensing law

As students begin university for the first time, new research commissioned by TV Licensing has found they may be unaware of the law for watching live television online.

Some 28 per cent wrongly believe they do not need a TV licence when watching or streaming live programmes on their laptop.

The findings also discovered almost a third of students think they do not need a licence when streaming or watching live television on a mobile device. Students who do this are running the risk of prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.

“Our new research shows how important it is for students to understand the law when it comes to watching live TV. We’re working with universities around the UK, including the University of Chichester to ensure students who want to watch live TV can do so legally and with the peace of mind they are on the right side of the law,” said Victoria Sykes, TV Licensing spokesperson for London and the South East.
