Students promote sustainable travel

Students from Chyncton Primary and Cradle Hill CP Schools launched their sustainable transport artwork at Seaford train station last week.

Seaford Primary and Annecy Catholic Primary School also created artwork for the project, completed in association with Sussex Community Rail Partnership, Southern Railway and Sustrans.

Sam Lear, from Sussex Community Rail Partnership, said: “The artwork shows genuine talent and creativity and is a perfect example of what can be achieved by working in partnership and helps make the station even more part of its local community.”

The artwork will be installed in the booking hall of the station as the culmination of a considerable refurbishment of the station building, and it will be welcomed by Seaford passengers for creating a unique display at the station which so clearly reflects the local environment.

As part of the official ceremony at the station, led by Lucy Dance from Sustrans, students gave speeches about their artwork and cycling to school with the Seaford Bike Train.

The group also cycled to the station for the unveiling.

Harvey Jenkins, aged 10 from Chyncton Primary School, said: “Making the artwork was really fun. Lots of paint and mess and we used bike parts to make it 3D.

“We need more cycle paths in Seaford, my family find riding on the roads very busy.”

Andy Gardner, from Southern, said: “I’d like to say a massive thank you to Sustrans, Sussex Community Rail Partnership and all the local schoolchildren and staff who got involved in this exciting project.

“I love to see the railway being involved in initiatives that connect it with the local community.

“This one brought four different schools together to deliver one amazing piece of artwork which will look fantastic when displayed later this year.”

An art exhibition, of artwork done by year 4 pupils at Harbour Primary School, was unveiled in the waiting shelter at Newhaven Town Station last year.

The artwork was the culmination of a joint project which saw the children study all aspects of sustainable travel before creating six inspiring artworks to adorn the shelter at the station.
