The group is aimed both at people who suffer from Parkinson’s and those who are their carers.

The Midhurst Parkinson’s Group meets on the second Wednesday of the month from 2 to 4pm at the Catholic Church, St Mary’s Presbytery, in Midhurst’s Bepton Road.

The Chichester and Bognor Regis branch of Parkinson’s UK, which includes the Midhurst area, offers friendship and support through regular social activities and a quarterly newsletter which includes updates and calendar dates.

Spokesman Pat Bryant told the Observer: “When first diagnosed some people often choose to deal with the implications for everyday life themselves or are unaware of the help and support available.

“It is a great opportunity to meet others with similar challenges in a friendly, informal way.”

She added: “At the Midhurst meeting we sometimes have a speaker, sometimes we have a less formal agenda but always we have tea and cake, a quiz, a raffle and plenty of time to chat and ask questions.

“Information leaflets are also available.”

Parkinson’s is a progressive, neurological condition affecting around one person in 500.

Although there is currently no cure, there are a range of medicines and treatments available to manage the symptoms and everyone’s experience of Parkinson’s is different.

A member of the Midhurst Parkinson’s Group said: “Meeting once a month makes me feel less isolated because I can share my problems with others who understand, which is very valuable.

“We also have a good time, testing our knowledge with the quiz and chatting with friends.”
