Sussex carers are ‘hugely appreciated’

Care workers have been recognised for their hard work at an awards ceremony.

The West Sussex Care Accolades – recognise the dedication of those working in adult social care including dementia care and caring for people in their own homes.

Nada Wakeford, who works at The Shelley care home in Worthing, won the Registered Manager Award.

Nada was praised by one of the home’s residents for ‘listening, crying and laughing along with the residents’.

The resident, who has not been named, said: “We all get good vibes from Nada and she makes us love living at the home.”

Peter Catchpole, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for adults social care and health, said: “It was a privilege to meet care workers at the awards. It is really important to recognise great care. I am sure I speak on behalf of the county when I say to all care workers that the role they do is hugely appreciated by all of us.”

Helen Wheeler of Melrose Care Home in Worthing scooped the Chair’s Award and was described as ‘bringing joy to the residents and staff’ of the home.

Other winners included Barbara Fletcher of Oak Lodge Nursing Home in Burgess Hill who won the Unsung Hero Award and was described as an ‘inspiration’.

The awards, now in their sixth year, are organised by West Sussex Partners in Care and are supported by West Sussex County Council – coinciding with the council’s care month.

The awards ceremony was held at Arundel Wetland Centre on Thursday, October 15.

The winners were:

Care Home Worker - Abbie Andrews of Hambrook Care near Chichester; Domiciliary Care Worker - Donna Sutherland of Egalite care in Worthing and Dot Walker of Sussex Grange Home Care in Selsey; Registered Manager - Nada Wakeford of The Shelley care home in Worthing; Dementia Care - Kathy Greenfield of Ferndale residential care in Southbourne; Ancillary Worker - Bridget Flynn of Oak Lodge Nursing Home in Burgess Hill; Care Employer Award - Melrose Care Home in Worthing; End of Life Care Award – Liz Seymour of Melrose Care Home in Worthing; Unsung Hero Award - Barbara Fletcher of Oak Lodge Nursing Home in Burgess Hill; Best Practice Award - Anne Price from the Aldingbourne Trust in Aldingbourne; Chair’s Award - Helen Wheeler of Melrose Care Home in Worthing.
