Tai Chi Demo for Children In Need

There was a fierce chill on Saturday morning but it didn't deter Tai Chi teacher Richard Odell from trying a little fundraising with his students.

The group demonstrated their gentle martial art beside the bandstand at the De La Warr Pavilion to raise money for Children In Need.

They went through their slow and rhythmic paces while spectators stood by shivering, with a bucket available for money to be thrown into.

This is the second year Richard has led his students through the public demonstration which also included Qigong. It was suggested that people dress warmly for the experience, which they did, and one students even wore a Pudsey Bear type bandage which must at least have kept her forehead warm.

Richard teaches Tai Chi outside the DLWP early every Thursday morning during summer, and also has classes in Little Common, Bexhill, Hastings and Battle.

He said: "When I started out, you would struggle to find to find a Tai Chi teacher, but there are more about now and people have more idea of what Tai Chi is - some might actually have seen it before."

He has been doing it for 16 years now and commented: "I was looking for something else. I had been working in London for 11 years and I was looking for something more satisfiying for the soul."
