Talk on adventures in South Africa

THE September meeting of North Bersted Village WI started with the singing of Jerusalem followed by happy birthday sung for Joan Marsh, Maureen Jones and Shirley Catlett.

Two visitors, Mary Smith and Maud Charlesworth, were welcomed.

Since the July meeting, the lunch club had met twice and two further dates were arranged.

Refreshments were provided at the Bersted festival in July with a cake stall and competitions.

The helpers were kept busy as they were also at the open day in August when members who had attended Denman College courses demonstrated what had been learnt.

For organising the refreshments at both these events, Jackie Bradford was presented with a bouquet of flowers for her hard work.

Denman College work was again on display at the link institute in Castle View, Portchester, where Peggy Jackson gave aromatherapy hand massage and Sheila Robertson and Iris Thomson gave an excellent report about the greatest 100 musicals.

Two teams entered the county quiz at North Mundham both with middling results.

The speaker who was to talk on wildlife and the law unfortunately did not arrive, so member Gill Dart offered to talk on her experiences in South Africa.

She said she was very moved when coming into contact with some of the wildlife and also when watching the rain dancers perform.

Phyl Wilbraham thanked Gill for an interesting talk.

Iris Thomson supplied an animal quiz and the two visitors Mary and Maud tied equal first.

Some members realised their limited knowledge about animals and the group would have fared better in the quiz had the talk on wildlife taken place.

At the October meeting Mr Harris from Acorn Talks will speak on '˜Open All Hours'.

The competition is '30s and '40s memorabilia and social time will be the reading of a favourite poem.

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month at 2.45pm at Jubilee Centre in Chalcraft Lane.
