Chichester District Council updated its housing policy on Tuesday, in preparation for its role in the country’s housing of 20,000 Syrians, pledged by the Government.

Across the whole of West Sussex, a total of 240 refugees will be accommodated.

Councillor Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services and deputy leader, said: “No one can fail to be moved by the terrible scenes of those fleeing war and persecution that we have seen on our televisions.

“As a council, we are committed to play our part in supporting the Government’s policy in supporting Syrian Refugees by welcoming around 10 families over a five year period within our district.

“These people have been through things that most of us cannot even imagine and deserve to live in a place where they are safe and secure.”

Council officers explained to cabinet members on Tuesday that the district would have to accommodate two extra housing allocations per year, in addition to the average of 420 allocations from the housing register.
