THERE is a seasonal reminder in Rogate of the success of the villagers’ fundraising project for the restoration of the bell tower at their parish church, St Bartholomews.
In 1998, parishioners raised the grand sum of £1,500 to restore the tower. And for every pound that was donated to the cause, a crocus bulb was planted.
Sixteen years later, the churchyard is ablaze with the colourful blooms at the start of spring as a permanent commemoration of the hard work. Parishioners are renowned for their floral displays. Just down the road at St Peter’s, Terwick there will be a spectacular display of lupins later this year.
