The story about a mouse and a bear learning to share a chair captured the imagination of pupils in 32 primary schools across the county and has won West Sussex Children’s Picture Book Award: Picture Books To Shout About 2015/16.

There was a shortlist of four titles to choose from, but the twist in the tail from the extremely grumpy mouse had the pupils on the edge of their seats.

David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for libraries, said: “Reading for enjoyment is key to developing literacy and life skills for the future.

“Our school pupils have had great fun sharing and talking about the books on the shortlist.”

The announcement comes on World Book Day, which celebrates authors, illustrators, books and reading in general.

Mr Barling added: “The schools library service has worked in partnership with public libraries to encourage children to borrow more stories that they can share with their families.
