Total of 190 West Sussex County Council jobs to go in March

Major staffing cuts being implemented by West Sussex County Council will provide more cash for priority services, improve efficiency and help hold down council tax, it was claimed this week.

The moves are also aimed at easing the impact of continuing Government curbs on grants for West Sussex.

Cllr Steve Waight, the county cabinet member for resources, insisted that all of the reductions were in layers of management and some 'back office' staff, and that front-line jobs would not be affected.

He disclosed that a total of 190 staff would go before the end of March, 2007, and that a further 150 job losses were also in the pipeline.

Voluntary redundancies will be sought, but a recruitment freeze means that 50 posts in the system are already vacant, which can be removed from the total.
