The Deputy Mayor of Hailsham, Cllr Jeff Bentley-Astor, told the Express he was inviting the town's organisations to a special meeting at the council offices, at 7.30pm on October 9.

The chairman of the competition will be explaining the details of South East in Bloom at the meeting and suggest ways to take the next step forward.

Cllr Bentley-Astor said: 'As the name suggests there is an element of floral displays in the competition.

'However, the main purpose is about community co-operation and involvement.

'The town has made a very good start, but has no specific plans at this time.'

Judges of the competition will want to look at several areas of town life in Hailsham, including the environment, recycling, wildlife preservation, anti-graffiti and vandalism.

South East in Bloom encourages towns and villages to make positive improvements in their communities.

It involves participation from residents, schools, businesses, charities, and other organisations.
