Town show enjoyed by all ages

Fun in the sun was the order of the day when the town staged its first Bognor Regis Community Town Show for more than 25 years in Hampshire Avenue recreation ground, Westloats Lane on Saturday.

Organised by Bognor Community Action Network (CAN), it was also the chance for the community to shine.

Held in three marquees erected in the ground, around 1,000 people of all ages turned out for the day to demonstrate their skills in a variety of ways from cake making to flower arranging, or to gain information on a wide range of subjects.

Funded by a 10,000 grant from the National Lottery Awards for All to the Bognor Regis and District Horticultural Society, which will also be used to run ongoing workshops in the local community, and 5,000 Local Area Agreement initiative, the day was billed as a '˜low-key partnership event with Bognor CAN '“ previously known as the Pevensey Project '“ Bognor Regis Town Council and the horticultural society.

'Everyone who came said they were very impressed,' said Carol Fullick the development manager for Bognor CAN.

The marquees provided activities for children of all age groups, a food workshop demonstrating healthy eating and demonstrations and horticultural society exhibits and displays.

Workshops in flower arranging and container gardening sat alongside the opportunity for visitors to try their hand at mosaics, clay modelling arts and crafts and using recycled materials including musical instruments from baked bean cans.

Among those in attendance were Lloyds Pharmacy giving free diabetes, blood pressure checks and health information, West Sussex County Health and Safety officers, Trading Standards and other bodies providing information on accidents in the home and basic first aid.

Residents excelled in hortcultural classes with prizes for flowers, vegetables and fruit, arts and crafts, cookery with a number of categories for children to enter.

Many of the workshops and activities on the day are also on offer on a weekly basis to children and young people through the Bognor Regis Community Centre in Westloats Lane. Carol is now on the look out for more volunteers to help out.

'We do heavily depend on community support and volunteers and always need some more.'
