Traders call for action to tackle Midhurst’s car parking shortage

Traders are calling for measures to tackle Midhurst’s ‘desperate’ shortage of car parking space which they claim is driving shoppers away from the town.

Vice-chairman of the town council John Quilter told fellow members he had been asked to take up the issue by members of the Midhurst First traders group.

He said they were concerned not only about the lack of permanent parking space in the town, but also about school building contractors clogging up the North Street car park and the aggressive attitude of Chichester District Council’s parking enforcement officers.

“The North Street car park is causing increasing problems and the contractors from the Midhurst Rother College school building site are making the problem worse,” he said.

“I have been told traders have had calls from customers who said they were trying to get into Midhurst, but had driven round and round the car park unable to find a space and had gone home.”
