The backing for the call for traffic lights at the junction of B2233 Yapton Road and the A259 has been given in just a week.

The petition was set up by Emma Cook after Climping resident Charlotte Hull suffered fatal injuries when her car left the road at the junction.

“The response to the petition has been brilliant,” said Emma. “Everybody I have spoken to wants changes made at that junction. They are getting behind the campaign.

“One man told me the junction had been claiming lives for 60 years since he was a boy. That shows how strongly people feel about the junction.

“We are prepared to fight for this and take it as far as we need to go. Lives cost more than traffic lights.”

The Flying Fortress in Ford gathered 60 names on the petition in just 90 minutes

The petition states: “There have been several incidents at this section of road. More recently fatalities.

People have lost their lives due to this dangerous section of road.

“We can’t go through the pain and anger of losing anyone else to this section of road. We need traffic lights before any more incidents happen.”

Charlote Hull died at the scene of her accident at about 5.35pm on February 4.

She was the mother of two boys – Harry, eight, and Joey, ten – and her fiancee, Jake Pike, called her ‘a real ray of light’.

Middleton resident Emma, who knew Charlotte, said she used the road regularly with her children in the car.

“There had been a call for road improvements in 2013 when another man had lost his life on the same junction,” she said.

“This was campaigned for two years and rejected.

“There have been many accidents and near misses and it continues to be a matter of time before there will inevitably be another fatality.”

“Just from my research, statistics show that this is one of the most dangerous roads in the area and yet it is being underestimated.

“I also feel that with the new relief road opening, it will only get worse with people travelling to use this alternate route.

“This is why we have started this petition again in the hopes that our pleas will be heard.”

Just over 2,000 people have signed the online petition at https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/121117

Paper copies have also been signed by 300-plus at locations like the Arun Leisure Centre, pubs such as The Oystercatcher, The Southdowns and The Beresford as well as the area’s post offices.

At 10,000 signatures, the government will respond.

If they reach 100,000, the petition will considered for a debate in parliament. The petition lasts for six months.
