Selsey RNLI search for missing swimmer in West Wittering

Crews from Selsey RNLI were called out yesterday (August 16) after a man went missing at West Wittering beach.

The man had been drinking alcohol and was last seen in the water with just his underwear on, according to the RNLI.

Both Selsey all-weather lifeboats and the inshore lifeboat were requested at 3.55pm to assist Sussex police in the search.

Selsey RNLI stated that the inshore lifeboat headed straight for Wittering whilst the all-weather lifeboat headed to a position half a mile west of the Bunn leisure complex and started a search half a mile offshore towards Wittering.

Hayling RNLI and the Coastguard helicopter Rescue 104 were also in attendance.

At 4.25pm the coastguards reported the man had been found and all units stood down, and Selsey lifeboats returned to the station at 5.10pm.
