The man was stuck standing in one metre of water at the bottom of the well in Lower Street, after an attempt to clean his well went wrong.

He was winched out using the harness he was still wearing from being lowered in by technical rescue teams just after 6pm.

A fire crew from Storrington were first called to the scene at 4.40pm, with a specialist hazardous area ambulance crew called in from Gatwick as per procedure for confined spaces.

Station Commander Marvin Smith said a total of around 20 firefighters were called in as part of the rescue operation.

He said: “He’d pumped out water and was cleaning the well. I think he got lowered down by a couple of people, but a couple of people wasn’t enough to pull him out. He’d been lowered down on the rope, he had a proper harness on which we used to pull him out.”

He added that the man was cold, wet and embarrassed, but otherwise unhurt by the incident.
