A spokeswoman for Southern said the train was moving at under 10mph when it left the tracks and was carrying only a handful of passengers.

She added: "A full investigation is underway to find out the cause of the derailment. "We would like to apologise to our passengers for the delays to their train services and any inconvenience this may cause."

Trains running through West Sussex and from the coast to London stations have also been delayed, altered or cancelled this morning.
