Angmering crossing with ‘history of misuse’ closes

NETWORK Rail has announced plans to close a foot crossing over the tracks near Angmering station, claiming it had a “history of abuse”.

Pagett’s Crossing is due to shut later this year, after the completion of improvements to the nearby Roundstone level crossing to make it safer for pedestrians.

Five years ago, there were calls for the crossing to be closed, following the death on New Year’s Day, 2007 of Adam Blackwood, 18, who was hit by a train as he made his way over the railway with a group of friends.

However, an East Preston villager, Richard Akhurst, of Sea Road, has criticised the move, pointing out that the crossing carried an ancient footpath linking East Preston and Angmering.

In a letter to the Gazette (see pages 26/27), Mr Akhurst writes: “Over the years and with the continuing developments in both Angmering and East Preston the usage by locals has increased till today it is still used by very many locals and school children.”

He adds: “My first option is to retain the crossing, as it is at present. I do however accept that an alternative to retain the crossing would be for an electronic gate to be controlled as with the road crossing.”

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “We are committed to making crossing the railway safer and this can involve improving or closing level crossings.

“This decision will improve safety at crossings in this part of Angmering and we have been in consultation with West Sussex County Council, Arun District Council, Angmering Parish Council and East Preston Parish Council throughout the process.”
