Broadbridge Heath driver banned from roads after drink-driving arrest

Elizabeth Cogbill, 21, of Charrington Way, got behind the wheel after a night out drinking with friends on June 22, police said.

As she headed east towards Billingshurst on the A272 at about 3am, she lost control of her car and struck a telegraph pole, leaving the road blocked.

She pleaded guilty to drink-driving and was banned from driving for 20 months, fined £250 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £25 victim surcharge.

Superintendent Jane Derrick said: “Everyone knows that it is dangerous to drive after drinking but for some reason Cogbill decided to take the risk.

“She admitted after she was arrested that she had been stupid and couldn’t believe what she had done.

“If she had thought of the consequences before she had got behind the wheel she would not have written off her car, cost herself hundreds of pounds in court bills and been banned from the roads.

“Not only has she lost the right to drive at the moment, if she decides to drive again in the future she will face a steep rise in insurance.”
