Traffic wardens slapped parking tickets on Midhurst community buses despite repeated requests from volunteers for renewed free parking permits, it has been claimed.
For almost two months chairman of Midhurst Community Bus Association Nick Wheeler made failed attempted to renew permits with Chichester District Council (CDC), but less than four hours after the Observer raised the matter a spokesman announced it would renew the permits and discuss the parking tickets.
Mr Wheeler has accused CDC of trying to back out of its promise to give them free parking permits.
Officers failed even to reply to repeated requests for renewed permits from the voluntary groups, the Community Bus Association which serves those without transport – particularly the elderly – and Tandem, which provides transport for elderly and disabled people. Then traffic wardens posted three parking tickets on community buses all parked at the Grange Centre car park.
Mr Wheeler told the Observer: “I am very surprised and disappointed CDC appeared not to stand by the commitment they made to the community bus association. This action was going back on the undertaking they gave us.”
