UPDATE: Angmering and Rustington hit by floods - with video

MORE than an inch of rain falling overnight caused flooding on roads in Angmering and East Preston.

The centre of Angmering was under almost 2ft of water shortly after 3am today (Monday, June 11) and police closed roads leading into the village, including Water Lane, High Street, Arundel Road and Station Road.

It’s thought a couple of homes may have been affected, and staff at the Pearl Dentistry surgery, in The Square, have been mopping up after the floodwater and mud from nearby flower beds poured though the door.

This morning’s appointments were cancelled but it’s hoped that the surgery will be open as normal tomorrow.

Rob Martin, clerk of Angmering Parish Council, lives near the village centre and saw the flooding in The Square at about 3.30am.

“It was about 18inch to 2ft deep, and the whole of The Square was under water. Most of the businesses in the centre are raised up, so they got away with it.

“It was a lucky escape in lots of ways, considering the amount of water there. If it had been just another inch or two higher, there could have been serious flooding all round,” he said.

It’s thought a torrent of water flowed down Water Lane after Patching Pond, two miles away, broke its bank. Debris from the pond was littering Water Lane earlier on today.

By 8.30am, the water in the centre of Angmering had subsided and roads were open as normal.

There was also deep water in Station Road, Rustington, where motorists had to take extra care as they drove through the floods.
