Trapped blue tits at Warnham Nature Reserve released into the wild

Over the past week the RSPCA said six birds were found dead and multiple other injured in glue traps at the wildlife preserve, in Warnham Road.

According to the charity - based in Southwater - a substance known as bird lime was smeared on feeders and surrounding vegetation, entangling the animals causing them ‘immense distress and suffering’.

Five blue tits and one great tit were killed whilst other birds were taken to the Countryside Warden to be cleaned and rehabilitated.

A video has been released by Warnham Nature Reserve as it announced it has now released many of the injured animals back into the wild.

A spokesman said: “After a difficult week on the Reserve with the problems with illegal bird trapping it is with great pleasure I can now share this video with you. The Blue Tits which were suffering the effects of glue were all cleaned by the Wardens and looked after over the weekend. All have made a full recovery and were released on the Reserve this morning. Our thanks to RSPCA (England & Wales) and Tim Thomas for the advice given on the clean-up operation.”

The RSPCA is hunting for three men who they would like to speak to in connection with the incident.
