Two post boxes set alight in Chichester

TWO POST boxes have been set on fire in Chichester this morning.

The fire service was called to a report that the post box was alight on West Street, right outside House of Fraser, and were then alerted to a similar fire in the box on East Street outside Phone-In and Next.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: “We were called to the fire at 7.17am and then the second just seven minutes apart so it does look like someone has started them on purpose.

“We have contacted police who will look to see if there’s anything on CCTV.”

He said extra care was taken to try not to damage any of the letters further.

He said: “C02 extinguishers were used to put out the fires instead of water which doesn’t damage the letters as much.

“The two boxes have been sealed off and we are liaising with Royal Mail to get them emptied as soon as possible.”
