PROSE & POETRY EVENING: The sixth annual celebration of this event, in the Hall last Saturday, was another great success. The passages chosen for reading (or recital) aloud were as delightfully varied as ever, ranging as they did from the Book of Exodus to Roger McGough, and notably including (from the same household) one of Robert Frost's best-loved poems and a spoof appeal from Her Majesty to all American citizens to renounce independence and return to the British fold. We also enjoyed Gary Marriott's rendering of three Flanders and Swan songs. For dinner our talented Brede partners once again produced a scrumptious spread of sweets, preceded by another of the indomitable Wheeler family's delectable main courses. Those of you who couldn't manage to be there (and some of the tables had a few empty chairs) missed a great treat. For all this, much credit is due to the organizers, Gary and Robert, whose efforts resulted in raising useful sums, supplemented by the sale of raffle tickets, for both St Georges' and St Mary's church funds.

UDIMORE QUIZ EVENING: Most disappointingly, the organizers have had to cancel this year’s event, which was due to take place this Saturday. After several tables withdrew, largely because of illness, there weren’t going to be enough to make a proper evening of it. Plans are afoot to choose a better (and perhaps healthier?) date next year.

CHURCH SERVICES: This Sunday in St Mary’s there will be Holy Communion at 8am and Evening Prayer at 6pm.

PARKING IN RYE: There’s to be a public meeting to discuss the current chaotic situation, in the Rye Community Centre (Conduit Hill) on Thursday evening, March 3, at 5.45 for 6pm. The Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne, has undertaken to be there, to explain how things stand at present and to answer questions put to her from the floor. To be sure of a seat, it would be wise to get there in good time.

SPRING BRUNCH: Next Saturday, March 5, we’re invited by the Friends of St Mary’s to join them for a perhaps a little later than usual breakfast in the Hall, between 9.30 and 11.30am, with a choice from toast to a full English. It’s sure to be an enjoyable occasion.
