Under Cover a year early

CHRISTMAS will be coming early for pupils at East Preston Infant School, thanks to a dedicated band of fundraisers.

The school has reached its 33,750 Under-Cover fundraising target much earlier than expected for extensive improvements, including a state-of-the-art computer suite, a larger library and a new corridor, which should be ready by November 14.

Headteacher Brenda Berridge was absolutely delighted and wanted to thank everyone who had made this possible.

"We didn't think we would be able to start the building work until next summer, but here we are now, it's unbelieveable.

"This achievement is all credit to not only the parents but to the whole community. The villagers have really made this their cause and it has been brilliant," said Mrs Berridge.

Building work is due to start soon on the Under-Cover Project, which takes its name from the roof which will be built over the school's inner courtyard. This will house the new IT suite, which will be equipped with 15 computers, an interactive white board and facilities for a disabled pupil

The Under-Cover fundraising campaign was launched in March of last year to fund the 90,000 improvement plans. Half the cost was stumped up by a Seed Challenge Bid grant and the school was able to contribute 11,250 from its funds.

School governors Garry Ettridge and Jane Musgrave spearheaded the campaign to raise the rest of the cash and it was even given support by local celebrity Des Lynam.

Traders, pubs, clubs and the East Preston Festival committee all rallied round to help the school achieve its target.

The fundraising group, chaired by teacher and village resident Jackie Burrell, will continue its activities, albeit in a more low-key fashion, to ensure the facilities can be equipped to a high standard.
