UPDATE: Snow causes several car crashes around Chichester

A lorry hit the central reservation barrier on the A27 westbound between Chichester and Havant at around 11.15 today.

There were injuries and Chichester Police confirmed the area is now clear.

One vehicle hit a barrier near The Anchor Pub on Selsey Road at 9am.

No one was injured and the road is now clear.

The A29 at Nyton Road in Eastergate is closed in both directions between B2233 Nyton Road and Fontwell Services Roundabout because of an accident.

There were reports of people abandoning their vehicles.

There are delays on the A285 at Duncton Hill between Chichester and Petworth, as a lorry and a bus are stuck at the bottom of the hill.

A five car collision caused chaos on the A27 at in Emsworth this morning, just after 8am.

Police and fire crews from Hampshire and Sussex attended, and the incident has been left with Sussex Police.

There was disruption at Fishbourne roundabout after reports of an accident this morning.

Police also confirmed reports of a collision between a cyclist and a bus on the one-way system near Northgate, Chichester.

The incident occurred yesterday (January 17), at around 5.30pm and no-one was injured.

Sussex Police remind drivers to stay safe, and Superintendent Grenville Wilson said: “As snow starts to affect the county Sussex Police is working closely with its partner agencies to ensure there is as little disruption as possible.

“Drivers are reminded to check the weather forecast for the entire length of your journey before setting out and only make a journey if absolutely necessary.

“When driving in snow and ice you will need to change the way you drive. Your vehicle will not start, stop or steer in the same way it usually does. Stopping distances are greatly increased in icy conditions, so slow down and keep a bigger distance between you and the vehicle in front. Brake or accelerate carefully and gradually, and take corners very slowly.

“Pedestrians and cyclists should also ensure they have high visibility clothing to ensure they are seen by drivers.

“As it is unclear how long the cold weather is going to last we would remind people to check on their more vulnerable neighbours to ensure they are safe and warm.”
