A FIRE-BREATHING 1913 Monarch will be appearing at Goodwood next month, creating a cacophony of sound and flames.

Owner Duncan Pittaway restored the vehicle 25 years ago, using an aircraft engine and seats from the same aircraft.

Driving in it was once desribed by a friend as like ‘sitting on the bonnet of a car hanging on to the windscreen wipers’.

Duncan will be racing the Edwardian motoring machine at the 74th Members’ Meeting at Goodwood Motor Circuit, which takes place from March 19 to 20.

He said when driving the Monarch, it was not about speed. It was just as much fun going round a roundabout in the 1913 vehicle at 30mph as it was having a Ferrari go from 0mph to 60mph in five seconds.

“The most alarming thing for the modern driver is not necessarily overtaking them but overtaking them with a cacophony of sound and flame that they are concerned may be melting the side of their modern Mini Cooper.” he added.

The Goodwood Members’ Meeting was introduced by Lord March to recreate the electric camaraderie from BARC Members’ Meetings during the iconic motorsport heydays of the 1950s and 1960s.

The event will feature thrilling races with a huge range of historic cars and motorcycles as well as high-speed demonstrations.

In the evening, a spectacular party is held at the motor circuit with fireworks, live entertainment and food sourced from the Goodwood Estate.
