VIDEO: Cargo ship grounded in Solent captured by reader

The Heogh Osaka was deliberately run aground off the Isle of Wight when it began to list shortly after setting off from Southampton on Saturday night.

The high-quality video was shot from Cowes on the Isle of Wight by Michael Dangerfield, whose grandparents live in Chichester.

Michael said: “It’s big news here and after I heard about it on Saturday night I decided to head down to the shore with my camera on Sunday morning.

“There were lots of people looking at it beached just out to sea and I walked around the shoreline to get some good angles to film.

“Luckily I’ve got a decent zoom on my camera and for me the most fascinating thing was being able to see people on jet skis circling around the ship and having a nose.

“There was a few ribs around it as well, and as you can see in the video there’s police boats with flashing lights keeping people away.”

Michael’s video has already been watched more than 7,000 times on YouTube since being posted on Sunday under WightProductions.

The ship, which set sail from Southampton at about 8.20pm on Saturday was bound for Germany.

The 51,000-tonne transporter, which was laden with 1,400 cars, is still aground and listing at more than 50 degrees, though no oil is thought to have leaked.

Michael says he is planning to go back and film the salvage operation, which is expected to take several days.
