VIDEO: Frack-free protesters march through Horsham

Parents, grandparents and children waved banners, chanted slogans and handed out daffodils and flyers as they walked through the town on Sunday (January 31) rasing awareness of the dangers of fracking.

The peaceful protest was organised by Billingshurst Frack-Free and was part of a series of rallies held on the same day in towns and villages across the UK.

Campaigners from Brighton, Bognor Regis and even Suffolk and Essex came down to join the Horsham march, meeting at the bandstand in the park at 11am.

Actress Sue Jameson, who lives near Wisborough Green, said: “Keep Kirdford and Wisborough Green managed to stop the fracking industry there due to concerns over endless heavy lorries thundering through the villages.

“So if we all work together, across the UK, then people power can stop this industrialisation of so much precious countryside.

“Energy efficiency and renewables must be our nation’s future.”

Liz Sutton, of Climates Network, and Kayla Ente, of Brighton and Hove Energy Services Cooperatives, attended the Horsham march and spoke about choosing renewable energy sources over fracking.

Emily Anderson, a mum from Billingshurst, helped organise the protest and said she was concerned about the Celtique Energie site at Broadford Bridge, two miles away from her home.

She said: “It’s encouraging to see so many people turn out.

“Despite the rain, we really enjoyed marching through the shopping centre talking to locals.

“We stopped outside the County Council offices and Horsham Conservative Association to deliver a message to all who work there to say, ‘No Fracking Way, in the UK’.

“Local MPs Jeremy Quin and Nick Herbert are well aware of their constituents’ concerns of increased traffic and pollution of air and water, which will inevitably happen if this destructive industry takes hold.

“They need to stand up to their leaders in Westminster and do all they can to stop the destruction of their local areas before it’s too late.”
