VIDEO: West Sussex recovers from ‘mini tornado’

ROADS have been blocked across the county this morning (January 26) after freak winds tore through the area.

Starting near Midhurst yesterday evening (January 25), what has been described as a ‘mini tornado’ moved north east through the county, passing through Petworth and Fittleworth and hitting Crawley later in the evening.

Highways teams were working frantically to clear the roads today.

Four trees fell near the Swan Inn, in Fittleworth, completely blocking the A283.

At midday today teams were cutting up the final tree to try to reopen the road.

As it stands, no one is thought to have been hurt, with the majority of trees falling on empty roads in the evening.

Highways teams have been working since the wind rose around 4.45pm yesterday.

There has also been heavy rain throughout the morning and the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the county.

Rainfall levels in West Sussex are expected to be between ten and 15mm, most of this falling within six to nine hours.
