A call has been made for more volunteers to join a choice of walks in the Fernhurst and Haslemere area to raise vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The charity has named the events, on Sunday, July 15, the ‘Haslemere Walk’.
The longest, covering nine miles, will take a route through Marley Common, Fernhurst and Black Down. A four-mile alternative follows the Swan Barn Walk from Haslemere through farm, field and woodland.
Macmillan’s fundraising manager for the area, Mandy Kendall, said it was hoped people would get involved to show support for the work the charity does in the local community. Registration cost £10 per person. And volunteers are also needed to help on the day.
The Haslemere Walk is one of more than 50 Miles for Macmillan walks organised with support from pharmacy company Boots UK, with which the charity is now linked.
The partnership has been formed with the aim of improving the lives of all those affected by cancer.
Boots is introducing training for its pharmacists, healthcare colleagues and No7 advisers to help deliver more ways for people affected by cancer to get information and support on the high street, in local communities and online. Boots colleagues and customers have already raised £4m for Macmillan over two years.
Ms Kendall said it was hoped all the Macmillan walks, together, would raise a total of £1.8m which would help fund the therapists, nurses and support line workers who make sure people living with cancer ‘have the best team in their corner’.
“Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will ever face. But people don’t have to go through it alone. The Macmillan team is with them every step of the way,” Ms Kendall said. “More than one in three get cancer, two million are living with it. For those affected by cancer, Macmillan can help.”
