Wait is over for Wick school’s official opening

It’s been a long time coming but the wait to officially open White Meadows Primary School, in Wick, is now over.

The school, which had been hit by building delays pushing back its opening ceremony by more than six months, celebrated its completion in grand style on Tuesday (December 11).

Hundreds of pupils, teachers, parents and governors gathered for the occasion, and White Meadows – an amalgamation of the former Wickbourne Infant School and Flora McDonald Junior School – was a sight to behold as children welcomed guests with a festive line-up of dramas and displays.

Guests learned a thing or two about the terrible Tudors from plucky year-five children, and were treated to a couple of scenes from Shakespearian classic Macbeth by children in year-six, at the opening morning.

Reception class joined children from years one and two in the hall to perform a number of festive hits to build up the Christmas spirit.

Those from years three and four also gave a sneak preview to their seasonal play, entitled A Creepy Crawly Christmas.

The White Meadows school choir hit all the right notes during its performance at the event.

The children, all from years three and six, will be showing off their vocal flair to larger audience at the 02 Arena on January 30, as part of the Young Voice event.

White Meadows’ head teacher Luisa Gould said she was thrilled with the day’s festivities and that it was the perfect way to celebrate the school.

“We’re very proud of our learning environment,” Mrs Gould said.

“It’s an inspiring place for the children to learn within. The entrance is quite breathtaking and, although there have been delays, I think it’s all been for the best.

“We’ve been able to show the school at its best.”

She added: “These first 18 months since the infant and junior schools merged have been testing but, honestly, you wouldn’t know we were once two completely different schools.

“All the staff and pupils have gelled together and work as a team.”

The school, in Whitelea Road, is now anxiously awaiting its recent Ofsted inspection results, which were due to be announced this week.
