TODAY (March 7) Chichester District Council (CDC) has announced Kimberley Developments who are working with Waitrose, are the council’s preferred buyer for the old Grange Centre site.

Kimberley Developments will now develop a full planning application, which they will submit to the South Downs National Park Authority for a decision.

Chichester District Council and the developers will work towards exchanging contracts for the sale of the land, with the completion of the sale subject to planning permission.

The money made from the sale of the land will offset the cost of the building of the new Grange Centre.

“These are exciting times for Midhurst,” said CDC cabinet member Cllr Josef Ransley.

“We’ve just opened a brand new leisure and community centre, and now the land occupied by the old building is hopefully going to bring Waitrose to the town. The sale of the land will replenish our capital budgets and hopefully create more jobs and further encourage people to shop locally. Midhurst has a lot to offer, and we hope that both developments will bring a welcome boost to the local economy.”

Waitrose Director of Development, Nigel Keen, said: “Although there is a long way to go, this is a major step forward in being able to realise a long-standing ambition for us to have a Waitrose in Midhurst. We are continuing to evolve our proposal, which we believe can revitalise the site and make a positive contribution to the town’s future. We look forward to sharing our plans in more detail with residents and traders soon.”
