Fire crews were called to the blaze, affecting three acres of land near Carron Lane, just after 4pm on Friday.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service warned nearby neighbours to keep their windows shut due to smoke coming from the site.

On Saturday, a spokesperson for Midhurst Fire Station said: "Yesterday afternoon at 4.04pm both our appliances were ordered to reports an area of Midhurst common alight.

"On arrival crews found approximately three acres of common land involved in fire.

"Due to the restricted access and size of the fire additional appliances from Petworth, Chichester and Haslemere were requested.

"Using over 30 lengths of hose and two off road vehicles the fire was extinguished and the area damped down.

"Crews left the scene shortly after 7pm.

"We ask people to avoid using disposable BBQ in the countryside or having camp fires on common land."
