As lockdown restrictions lift on Monday, pubs, cafes and restaurants will be able to welcome back customers – but only in outdoor seating areas.

It means people will have to bear in mind the weather forecast when deciding to meet up with friends and families.

For residents in Sussex desperate to head back to hospitality venues, they may need to wrap up warm – at least for the first few days – and certainly at night.

The forecast tomorrow promises temperatures of just seven or eight degrees, with a sunny start becoming cloudy in the afternoon and a risk of rain at about 4pm or 5pm.

Tuesday is set to be slightly warmer, with maximum temperatures of nine or ten degrees, with more sun in the morning followed by cloud in the afternoon, according to the Met Office.

Wednesday and Thursday will see highs of ten to 11 degrees and yet more overcast afternoons.

But the sun is set to come out on Friday and Saturday and it will become slightly warmer, with highs of 12 degrees on Saturday.

Many venues have made adaptations in order to welcome back customers this week, from installing outdoor heaters to setting up marquees.

But for some places, this has not quite worked out as planned.

A restaurant in Worthing, West Sussex, had been preparing to open on April 12, until it was told by a Covid Compliance Officer that the open-ended tent it had erected on its decking was considered ‘an extension of the inside restaurant’ rather than an ‘outside’ space – read more here.

Customers will have to wait until the next phase of lockdown easing – May 17 – before they can sit inside at hospitality venues.
