Popular Midhurst businessman Roger Poat died suddenly at Cowdray Park Golf Club last Wednesday (May 31)

Roger, who was 71, owned Roger Poat and Partners funeral directors based in Duck Lane with his wife Janet. He retired ten years ago but the business still trades under his name.

He attended Midhurst Secondary School and after leaving, trained as a mechanic in Midhurst.

He then moved away but returned to Midhurst in the 1990s and worked for L F Lintott and Son, undertakers and then founded his own funeral directors.

A keen sportsman, he was a goal keeper for Portsmouth Football Club youth team and later played for Midhurst and Easebourne United. He also played cricket for Petworth. Since retirement golf had been his passion. He was also a keen member of Midhurst and Petworth Rotary Club, a past president and a Paul Harris Fellow.

“Roger was such a cheerful personality, always full of life and with a great sense of humour,” said his brother-in-law Eddie Lintott.

He leaves his wife Janet, two children David and Sarah, five grand children and two great grand children. There will be a private cremation on Thursday, June 15 followed by a service of Thanksgiving at Easebourne Parish Church at 1.30pm.

There will be family flowers only but donations to Midhurst and Petworth Rotary Club.
