West Sussex County Council said early reports provided by sixth forms showed young people in the county continued to perform well at A2 and AS level.

“The A2 grades for A* to E were slightly up in comparison with those achieved in 2014, however, the proportion of passes at A* to B were slightly down,” said a council spokeswoman.

Jeremy Hunt, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for education and skills, said: “I would like to congratulate all West Sussex students, whether in local authority-maintained schools, academies or colleges, on their achievements in this year’s AS and A-level examinations.

“I am absolutely delighted with the work and effort put in by our students in order to achieve their individual goals.

“I would also like to pay tribute to all our teaching staff, for their dedication and the excellent work they do with all the young people in the schools and colleges across West Sussex.”

The spokeswoman added that at AS-level the percentage of passes at A to B and A to E grades were up.

“These slight changes in results appear to reflect those reported nationally,” she said. “Good results have also been achieved by young people obtaining vocational qualifications.”

More detailed exams results will be available later in the year once figures have been confirmed and verified.
