WI centenary ‘madness’ brightens up the village

Not only have they planted up a raised flower bed for the occasion, they have decorated the trees either side with scarves and other knitted items.

Jenny Blake, from Angmering Green WI, described it as ‘Angmering WI madness’, bringing a host of colour to the area outside Angmering Village Hall, in Station Road.

“The bed is planted in the suffragette colours of green, pearl and amethyst, which have been adopted by the national WI, as so many of the first members of the WI were suffragettes and the WI continues to campaign on many matters of current concern,” she explained.

The two Angmering WIs have carried the colour scheme through in the knitted flowers and scarves that now decorate the trees.

Jenny said: “We have added knitted bees to tie in with the theme of Angmering in Bloom for 2015.

“The pink flowers represent the rose, called Inspiration, which has been specially grown for the WI centenary.”

In addition, members were challenged to plant up a 10in pot in the three colours, which were judged on Wednesday by Angmering in Bloom judges Chris Evans and Linda Ball.

Winner was Margaret Pett, with Su Carter second and Jenny Blake third. The judges also awarded a special Highly Quirky prize to Marianne Hubbard, reflecting her use of an orchid in her display.
