Dublin 1916: This evening, Friday March 18th, the Literary Society meets to hear Bill Doherty's talk on the literary and cultural influences of the Easter Rising and the subsequent literature it shaped. The theme 'A Terrible Beauty Is Born' was William Butler Yeats' rather cynical conclusion to his poem 'Easter 1916' on the insurrection in Dublin which at the time was viewed with discontent. An Annual General Meeting will also be held during the evening and arrival time is as usual 7 for 7.30pm in the Court Hall.

Easter services: St Thomas’ Church begins its Holy Week celebrations with the primary school service at 2pm today (Friday) and friends and families are welcome. On Palm Sunday March 20th all will gather at the War Memorial at 11am for distribution of palms and then process into Church for Holy Communion and the scriptural reading of Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the week before his death and resurrection. Maundy Thursday March 24th at 8pm there will be a Eucharist of the Last Supper and Watch. The next day Good Friday, March 25th, Stations of the Cross will be at 12 noon in the Church and be followed by a service at Icklesham Parish Church at 2pm concerning Meditation on the Passion of Christ. Holy Saturday March 26th the Vigil and First Eucharist of Easter begins at 8pm then on Easter Day March 27th there will be an Easter Holy Communion at 11am. Also remember that the clocks go forward on this day.

Bowls Club: The Bowls Club are inviting everyone to come along to a coffee morning tomorrow Saturday, March 19th at 11am till 1pm in the Lower Court Hall. This will be an opportunity to meet members of the club and to consider joining and playing for the 2016 season. It doesn’t matter if you have played before or not as it is about having a go and perhaps coming over to the green, behind the New Hall and practising your skills. The club plays in the Rother league and many friendly matches around Rother. It also represents Winchelsea in the Cinque Ports Bowls Tournament and many other competitions.

Mission possible: The Annual Church Meeting is held on a Saturday morning to enable more people to attend and this year it takes place tomorrow, Saturday at 10.30am in St Thomas’ Church. If you are on the Roll or have an interest in the running of the church please try to come along and attendees are encouraged to ask questions. The first part of the meeting is to elect Churchwardens for the year ahead; the second part is the Parochial Church Meeting which includes financial accounts and various reports, with only those on the Church Electoral Role eligible to vote; the third part involves the PCC meeting to elect its officers. Although plenty to consider it is not expected to be a mission impossible and should you wish to raise any matters before the meeting the secretary’s contact details are in the parish magazine.

Holy Week: Rev Ian Pruden, Methodist Minister, will be leading the service at the Wesley Chapel with ‘Reflections for Holy Week’ on Wednesday March 23rd. As Holy Week leads to the message of the Cross at the Easter weekend this will be a time of awareness and contemplation. A warm welcome as usual awaits all and the service begins at 7.30pm with light refreshments to follow.

Winchelsea Beach

Holy week: There will be a Palm Sunday Holy Communion service this Sunday March 20th beginning at 9.30am. On Easter Day March 27th an Easter Eucharist will be held at 9.30am to celebrate the Lord God’s resurrection. Both services are at St Richard’s Church and will be led by the Rector Robin Whitehead.

Chance to win: Every fortnight in the Community Hall there is always a likely chance of winning a cash prize when playing Bingo. For the practised player the aim is to stay calm and focused while appearing not to take the game too seriously. If you would like to attend doors are open at 7 for 7.15pm this Wednesday March 23rd and during the evening there will be light refreshments and a raffle.

Table Sale: Next Saturday March 26th the Winchelsea Beach Community Association is holding a Table Sale in the Community Hall from 11am. The cost is £6 to book a table (contact 01797 229163) or if you are coming in search of bargains entry fee is 50p which includes tea and biscuits, also home-made cakes will be on sale.
