Sussex Police is investigating the three-vehicle crash east of Petersfield, on the borders of Hampshire and West Sussex which involved a Renault box van, a Vauxhall Adam and a Peugot 207.

A police spokesman said: “ The Vauxhall driver, a 59-year-old woman from Waterlooville in Hampshire, suffered serious, potentially life-threatening injuries, and was flown by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital.”

He said the van, driven by a 37-year-old man from Burgess Hill, rolled onto its side. He and the Peugeot driver, a 46-year-old man from Emsworth, Hampshire, were both injured and were taken by ambulance to local hospitals.

Inspector Stewart Goodwin, of the Sussex and Surrey roads policing unit, said: “The crash has meant closure of the A272 between Petersfield and Rogate. Westbound heavy goods vehicles are being diverted at Midhurst.

“We do not expect to be in a position to lift the closures until mid-afternoon, but thank motorists using the A272 for their patience and understanding.”

He added: “Anyone who saw what happened or noticed any of the vehicles involved being driven shortly before the collision is asked to get in touch, quoting Operation Thor.”
