Woman on pavement killed by car

AN 85-year-old woman walking on a pavement has died after suffering serious head injuries when she was hit by a reversing car.

Police said a local driver lost control of a Citroen C2 while manoeurving between parked cars into a parking space in Eversley Road and mounted the pavement, colliding with a wall and several other vehicles.

The driver of the car was unhurt in Tuesday mornings incident.

Paramedics sealed the one-way street with two ambulances while they tended the unconscious victim on the pavement before taking her to the Conquest Hospital at Hastings where she died.

Three other vehicles were damaged in Tuesday's morning's accident in Eversley Road.

The victim was named yesterday as Mrs Doris Linn.

She was hit while only a few hundred yards from her home.

Mrs Linn lived at the Homehill House sheltered housing block in Cranfield Road.

Police immediately closed the northern section of Eversley Road as a crash investigation team was brought in to deal with the incident.

The investigation has been given the codename Operation Windward.

Sergeant Carl Chiverell of the Road Policing Unit at Polegate is appealing for witnesses to contact him on 0845 607099.

Police confirmed that a blue Toyota Yaris, a gold Rover 414, and a silver MINI were involved in the accident as well as the Citroen.
