Work on the plinth, at Hove's promenade close to the junction with Grand Avenue, started today (February 26).

Over the next eight weeks the core structure will be built, and cabling for power installed. Then high-quality stone cladding will be fitted as well as special stone paving around the plinth and in-ground lighting. A specially-designed fixture plate, based on a design used by the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, will be fitted on top of the plinth alongside further lighting.

The project is by Hove Civic Society, and aims to bring a new cultural attraction to Hove.

The plinth will be used for changing displays of sculpture, with major works being displayed for up to 18 months.

Helmut Lusser, chairman of Hove Civic Society, said: "This is our contribution to the city’s broad cultural canvas, which we hope residents of and visitors to Hove will enjoy for many years to come.

"A big thank you both to those who have helped to generate the funding for the plinth and the first sculpture and also to those who have helped us design, project-manage and construct this new landmark for Hove."
