Worthing woman on Japan jamboree team

Hannah Cordrey has joined the International Service Team, a multinational collection of adults who have volunteered to spend their summer holiday in the ‘engine room’ at the jamboree.

They will be ensuring the 30,000 young jamboree participants from across the world have a fantastic experience while on camp at Kirara-hama in Yamaguchi City,.

Hannah, a Brownie leader in Worthing, said: “I love being able to travel to new places through being a leader.

“I would have never had an opportunity like this without Scouting and I am having a great time.”

The World Scout Jamboree is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and during the two week experience, which ends on Saturday, Hannah will be meeting people from all over the globe.

She is among a team of 6,000 volunteers, including nearly 1,000 who have gone from across the UK.

Their job is ‘to make the jamboree happen’, whether through instructing, planning activities, as medical staff, caterers or IT consultants.

Hannah has never been to a jamboree before but was chosen to represent Girlguiding UK on a summer trip to Tanzania in 2013.

At the time, she was the first person in West Sussex to be selected since 2000.

Hannah has been involved in Girlguiding since she was a Rainbow aged five. She progressed through Brownies, Guides and Senior Section to being involved as an assistant leader and attending several units in the Sussex West division.

“Girlguiding is a huge part of my life and has given me the confidence and a number of skills that I need for in my future life,” she said.

Nature is a key theme for the jamboree programme, using the natural environment as a learning tool, demonstrating its vulnerability and what individuals can do to better protect the world.
