Young dog handlers put through their paces at Upper Birtley working tests

THE Arun and Downland Gun Dog Society organised three working tests at Upper Birtley near Haslemere.

It tested the youngest of competitors in the Young Handler, the youngest of dogs in Special Puppy and the least experienced of man and dog in the Novice Dog Novice Handler

Lynnette Irwin from Midhurst judged the Young Handler class and was very impressed by the ability of the children to direct the dogs.

Mark and Pauline Lucas from Petersfield judged the other two classes and were equally impressed by most dogs and handlers, as well as being very helpful with the novice handlers.

The two classes had very similar tests, with seen and unseen retrieves, on land and in water, as well as a test for steadiness where the handler had to pick up the dummy while another was thrown to shot.

Results: Young Handlers: 1, Alicia Upton-Jarvis handling Wrenny Jen from Kirbyhall; 2, Toby Hall handling Kirbyhall Wagtail; 3, Holly Mourdle handling Leospring Rapid Reaction; 4, Jack Godfrey handling Tumulus Timothy.

Certificate of Merit: Laura Muller handling Jess.

Special Puppy: 1, John Boyle with Rowledge Rebel; 2, Hilly Hoar with Kirbyhall Meadow Pipit; 3, Jacky Simpson with Tayfordwoods Gingema; 4, Gillian Yates with Lubbeke Royal Sapphire.
