Young engineers compete at international final

West Sussex charity Greenpower Education Trust is hosting the 2015 International Final at the weekend

There will be six teams representing the county at Northamptonshire track Rockingham on Saturday and Sunday.

These include Dorset House School in Pulborough, Seaford College in Petworth, Slindon College and two teams from The Weald School in Billingshurst. The West Sussex Youth Support and Development Service is also taking part.

The international grid will see around 110 school teams compete across Greenpower’s IET Formula 24 and IET Formula 24+ race categories.

The trust, a charity based in Fontwell, works to promote sustainable engineering among the next generation of engineers.

Chief executive Jeremy Way said: “Our international final is the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work by schools, colleges and universities who have competed in the series of Greenpower heats held throughout 2015.

“As our flagship event, it is not only a celebration of the very best young engineering talent in our country, and from further afield, but an opportunity to show what is possible in terms of sustainable engineering and design.

“We are proud to be hosting our final at Rockingham and especially look forward to the Siemens Digital Award being judged by McLaren Automotive, Red Bull Technology and Nissan.

“We also have some exciting announcements to make on-event about educational boards and institutions who will be supporting Greenpower this academic year.”

The 11 to 16-year-olds in the West Sussex teams will be competing in the IET Formula 24 category, having designed and built their all-electric vehicles.

Charity patron David Richards, chairman of Aston Martin and Prodrive, will be there to support the young racers, and Jason Bradbury, TV’s ‘face of technology’, will be commentating and hosting the prize giving.
