Blood service a 24/7 lifeline

IN RESPONSE to Duncan Barkes’ article (‘Volunteers are the lifeblood of the UK’, Observer, December 20) I would like to clarify to readers an inaccuracy in a comment that was made about blood deliveries.

NHS Blood and Transplant offers a blood delivery service 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

As well as regular routine deliveries we also offer hospitals an ad-hoc service when a top-up of blood is needed along with a ‘blue light’ emergency service when additional blood is needed urgently.
