Engineer? Clear!

I HEARTILY agree with the sentiments of the correspondent (Letters, December 29) decrying the casual use of the designation ‘engineer’ to describe virtually anyone with mechanical or electrical skills .

This is in part symptomatic of the emphasis that governments of all persuasions in recent decades have given to the financial sector as compared to industry and to the avoidance in the curriculum of ‘hard’ subjects.

As noted by your correspondent, the press and other media can play their part by choosing the appropriate terms to describe trades and professions.
