A TREASURE trove of memories has been brought into the Observer offices, as this is the year a fire station celebrates 75 years at the very heart of its community.

East Wittering Fire Station has been serving the community for a number of decades and the numerous pictures show firefighters doing everything from fighting flames, to holding fundraising bike rides.

During the next few weeks, the Observer will feature more items from the fire station’s archive, which encapsulates a unique look at the history of the station – and shows how the operating of the fire service has changed over the years.

This week, pictures include dramatic scenes of firefighters battling scorching fires, older pictures of the crew lined up in full uniform, and a more light-hearted, but no less important, venture as firefighters took to the saddle to raise money for a local health centre.

Under the banner of the Blazing Saddles, a group of firefighters
pedalled to every fire station throughout West Sussex to raise money for the Witterings Health Centre.

Pictures show the men standing outside each and every station – with additional pictures showing them hard at work pedalling on their journey.

Do these pictures bring back memories for you of the East Wittering Fire Station?
